Is there a way to do this without the machine running?? It seems rather unsafe to make the adjustment while it's running.

So, I have an older Shopsmith that I purchased used. When I attempt to increase the speed above "N" on the Dial, I get this sound that is like a baseball card in spokes, only metal on metal.
