I like these wooden designs. I was thinking about building something similar to the steady rest sold by Penn State Industries http://www.pennstateind.com/store/LSR3.html & mounting it to a second tool rest in the carriage but these designs look like they would give more support.

Now that the 510 & 500 are nearing completion (waiting for 2 bearing quill for the 500) I've moved onto the other shop-fire survivors. Next up the scroll saw.

took the quill off again for another look. splined end has a washer. Used 2 bearing quill on Ebay or $149 for new at Shopsmith ... leaning towards new but have a couple of items from Shopsmith on back order for the last 6 weeks.

The 500 is ser# 169480 so must be a single bearing.

I'm guessing that this is a single bearing quill. would buying a two bearing quill be worth it?

Put on glasses. the wobble was the way tubes. a quick tighten & no more wobble.
