Size of Storage Station

I was thinking of getting a storage station and then putting three of the new Storage Cabinets under it, does anyone have a storage station? Are the dimensions under it similar to the space under the Shopsmith without a Lift Assist or can I fit three cabinets under it?

Paul:

If you are referring to the "storage station" (555761) the answer is no. The space underneath is about seven inches too short in which to place three side-by-side cabinets.

However, on my storage station, I have placed a 16"x52" 3/4 inch plywood shelf. It rests on the lip of the horizontal leg brackets on each end. This gives me a lot of room to store additional accessory items.

WOW, I looked at the height at 30" and the storage units at <20 with the casters and was sure it world fit. Where am I missing it?

Hi Paul,

As I do not have the storage station, I can not answer your question. I suggest that you build your own storage station with the SS cabinets as a base

I went out to the garage and measured again; the red Shopsmith storage cabinets are 16 inches wide and sit 20 1/8 inch off the floor on casters. At this heighth, the storage station has only 41 inches of open clearance between the angled sheet metal legs. You could get two cabinets under there.

Most times I have more money than time, if I can buy it I usually do. I am actually replacing one I built in 1983, it was originally under the Shopsmith until I upgraded to the 520 and it didn't fit. So I moved it to a wall and store two SPT on top. I like the storage cabinets but don't have the room unless I get rid of the thing I built.

I finally understand, I have a width issue not height. I guess if I buy the three, I can put two under the storage station and one under the Shopsmith with lift assist.

Yes I purchased all three of the cabinets and they do fit until you decide to add the lift assist. I then placed mine in a corner of the shop and added a forth cabinet. They are stacked two high and two wide. I bolted them together and bolted a table to the top of them. For awhile I had stands for the Band Saw, Belt Sander and Jointer. Now each of those tools have theri own power stands and only the strip sander resides there. Okay that a lie I also have a cabinet sitting there that holds a variety of of shopsmith related parts and sanding supplies. I really am happy with the red tool boxes. Given all the supplies and tools I have they make great storage. Jim

yes I love the cabinets but no way they fit in my shop unless I get rid of something. I also have the wooden shelf on my Shopsmith so they would not fit in the front, I was thinking of accessing one from the rear and now putting two under the Storage Station.

It might be interesting to do the double stack the way you did and them put a 2x12 on top with the three mounting bases I already own to hold the tools. Is there a way to mount the board to the top, I need to still be able to move the whole thing.

Paul,

You are correct they will not fit under the Shopsmith with either the lift assist or the wood shelf. I have both. There are existing holes in the four corners of the cabinet tops. I simply removed the drawers and reached inside in order to run screws up into the wood top I am using. I attached the cabinets to each other in a similar fashion using the holes allready provided. I then drove screws down thru the mounting brackets into the wood top which alllowed me to store my tools on top. Later when I added the power stands for each tool I removed those brackets and still have a servicable work or storage area for other items. I would take a picture but just now the shop doesn't lend itself to picture taking. I used 3/4" plywood and cut the top larger than the demension of the cabinet according to the space I had available. In fact because the corner of the shop wasn't square neither is the top. Jim
