Red Cedar

Good day all,
It appears here in our area, red aroumatic cedar is hard to come by. Does anyone have a good source other than our woodcraft store? Where in the country is this cedar "trip-over" common. Probably like pine is here.

I believe Red Cedar is a California thing

Tis different! Western cedar is brown. Aromatic red cedar is purpleish with white sapwood. The 'aroma' is far stronger than the western cedar and different. The tree size is usually much smaller, the aromatic red cedar usually is full of knots. Termites hate it! It has good anti rotting characteristic(hence the fence post comment).

Well redwood has a distinct odor also, just not anywhere as strong.

I believe aromatic red cedar is in actuality a juniper tree. Scientific name is "Juniperus virginiana". Common names are sometimes confusing. Try finding a larger juniper in Idaho and saw up some. You may be able to get some 4" or 5" boards.

Here in East central Florida, we have "step over" supply's in all the wooded and residential areas..........from whole trees to pieces lying about....

it makes wonderfully colored projects!!!!!! and smells nice too!!

when i get home tonight, i can post some pics of recent turnings...
