What Kind of Wood is This?
From a piece of junk lying aound...
Not a great picture, but I hope there is enough clarity to allow someone to tell me what this wood is.

Kinda dark for walnut. The grain doesn't look quite right either.
I do not recognize it but perhaps rosewood??????

This was from my wife's grandmother's home in Canton Ohio. The wood is from a roof beam that was rough 4x3 or so. Art, my wife's dad, cut the beam out sometime in the 60's when he built on a back porch. He had this setting in his garage holding something up for 40 years.
What a find!
It does make a beautiful pen.

Considering all that, it may indeed be walnut. I would assume it was 'locally grown'.myoung44708 wrote:This was from my wife's grandmother's home in Canton Ohio. Like I said, that is the story I was told. Unfortunately no one is alive to confirm or deny.
But here is another thought...
Rosewood could be it. In the 70's, Art participated in the construction of Little Flower Church on Diamond St. in North Canton. This wood could be from the church that that was torn down to make room for the new building. He may have just gotten the source of the wood mixed up after 40 years.
Did the Catholics use rough hewn rosewood beams in their early church construction?

Beams are doubtful. Smaller objects perhaps(alter/pulpit/lectern/pew/trim/???)
P.S. I think the church is a more likely source than granny's house.

There wasn't a smooth surface on any of it...up untill I sanded all of the sides and exposed the wood grain...maybe framing for interior...something...
It is heavy as hell and hard as a rock...but turns nice. I'll break out the Nikon and take a good picture of it...not a blackberry pic, this weekend.

If you were that old, you would also be dense and hard.myoung44708 wrote:There wasn't a smooth surface on any of it...up untill I sanded all of the sides and exposed the wood grain...maybe framing for interior...something...
