Web sources I use to help me ID wood
This linkfrom Wood Magazine is pretty good.
I like thisone even more from WoodWorkers Source as it splits into domestic and exotic categories.

So...I take a picture with the Nikon and it is too big...way to big! All of the other cameras in the house, same thing, I resized it and this is what I got
I hope this is good enough to see the grain and color.

Looks a lot like Walnut to me.
Seven days without turning makes one weak.

It does look a lot like walnut. Then again it also looks like some aged sycamore does after age darkening. Sycamore was a very commonly used beam / framing wood here next door in Central Indiana. It still is used a lot for larger wooden beams. While usually a utility wood it can have very pretty graining and in some cases after staining it resembles wild cherry a lot. Not the most stable wood on the planet and must be well protected from any weather.
