For lack of a chuck

Can I turn a 1/2" tenon on my smaller stuff and then mount it in the drill chuck that fits the MT1 headstock of my little CarbaTec? Does that even make sense to anyone besides me???

Makes some sense. What stuff are you referring to making a 1/2 tenon on?

what you are describing makes sense. One thing to note is that most drill style chucks are not designed to handle much lateral force. Its the same reason why many people prefer to use the 1/4" router chuck for pen mandrels on the Shopsmith even though the drill chuck could work.

In general, it should be fine. Another option that people use sometimes is a dowel.

Basically, if you let the tool do the works and keep it sharp then it will probably be fine.

You can also make a jam chuck. Pretty easy if you have a MT drive end on an existing lathe. For the SS, you need to use a face plate. Google "make a jam chuck" for tons of articles.
