quill issue

ok so here you will down the tube thats the bearing thats moving and another pictures is just an over all view. the other two are with the do-hicky pushed in and pulled out

The silver collar is definitely not fully on.

However we need to see behind it(inside).

The MV appears to be early SS Inc. or late Magna American. Gray wrinkle paint.?

A pixof the shinel vent plate that the lower shaft is surrounded by(the end of the white coupler to the jointer. BTW the jointer is setting too low!

I am not sure this is a two bearing quill. The single bearing quills have a spacer that is often mistaken for a bearing.

yes its more of a gray color and has a wrinkle texture(hammer finish i think) so i thought the slack might be taken out if i could get the silver lock ring farther down. however, i cant move it

does anyone have any tips or tricks for that aspect? and there is a bearing in the inner tube i checked clearly. not a spacer. oh and yes im aware of the jointer it was not in use i just sat it in place showing a buddy how the machine worked. thanks for the help guys maybe by the end of this i will have a good working machine again.

Take the set screw completely out and look into the hole.

I think maybe it has been loose and tightened improperly and the shaft may be scarfed up. If so, it will be quite stubborn. If so pulling it off will create cavities in the softer aluminum collar, and the quill shaft can be filed to clean that up.

In any event the collar needs to come off.

i have to swallow my young ego now. it is a bearing with spacer. the serial is ss1506 and the problem is fixed now. the knurled silver collar just needed to be seated properly. so i do have one more question, as im sure you all know the table is really small is it hard or worth the money to upgrade to a 510 or 520 table system with free floats? any other upgrades you might recommend would be great.

That is a tough question as I wondered the same myself back in 1990 and now I have a 510 I upgraded to a 520, several more 500's which included a 1955 Greenie and another 510 along with several 10E's & 10 ERs along with a stand alone plane, stand alone scroll saw, stand alone router, a lathe duplicator, several sanders, jig saws, and so much more I can't think of it all.

Stop while you still can! <smile> I got lucky as many people have no idea what they have except for a lot "junK" and space being taken up where a nice sewing or quilting room might go...

Be sure to use them and you'll make a lot of nice things. Jacob Anderson rebuilds headstocks. I bought a couple of his DVDs and noticed he had one Shopsmith mounted on the wall as a permanent drill press.

Good luck. But remember you can save a fortune buying used/slightly used than new. The headstocks are very easy to overhaul and remember to keep it clean, oiled, and coated with paste wax. Then you'll have it forever.
