so you like the addition that the 510 has? its mainly the table space and rip fence slots that attract me. i'm only 24 so i still have alot of stuff collecting to do. but your right im loving the parts that are to found on ebay. i've got lucky though my father inlaw used to do alot of wood working and with his age he just cant mnage so he gave me free use of his wood stash which turns out to be around 1500 bf of 5/4x12x11' cherry and the same in black walnut, and around a 1000-1200 bf rough cut the same in maple and wormy chestnut.
With out God there would be no wood to make into dust.

I have a "500" that I purchased new in 1981. Over the years, I have purchased most of the accessories. It has been in constant use since I purchased it (3 houses) and only very occassionally have I found a need for a larger table. I do have two of the front table extensions and have an out-feed table.

Between the front table extensions, the out-feed table, the side extension tables, and a little planning, I figure I have an effective saw table of 5' by 5'. Much larger than any other saw I have seen (or could afford).

No, I don't break down sheet goods on the Shopsmith. I do that on the special cutting table that I assemble when needed just for that purpose in my garage (picture attached). My little cellar workshop is much too small to handle full size sheets of plywood.

Admittedly, most of the woodworking projects I have done are relatively small but I have also completed larger projects with it. Currently, I'm in the process of building a new kitchen island that will be 6' by 2'. And I'm using my Shopsmith for everything but the sheet goods (face frames, drawers, sliding shelves, and trim. When that is finished, SWMBO has me scheduled to remodel the remaining kitchen with new doors, drawers, sliding shelves, and of course paint. That too will all (except paint) will be done with my Shopsmith.

So, in a nut shell, I have never really found the need to upgrade (WANT to do it, yes, but not NEED).

A cheap way to gain a lot of table (as well as some other features) is to buy a cheap original Mark VII. If you fear the cam problem or can find one real cheap that does not run then replace the headstock with a Mark V poly-vee headstock. The Mark VII fence does not have the rip fence slots. I have not really looked at them to see if it would be easy or desirable to add after market slots. You could also maybe add after market slots to a 500 fence. The 520 fence looks very appealing to me with the extra slots but then there is always something else to wish for... :)

are there any good plans for an outfeed table on this website? the only thing that gets me is that the table moves so the height is never the same.

It just occurred to me that slots can be added to the 500(and MVII) fence by making a 'hood' for the fence with slots grooves only or aluminum extrusions on the top and sides and bolt it through the three holes in the sides of the fence.

I just might make one for myself, and make it longer thus creating a fence extension as well.:)

With all that rough cut stock, methinks a thickness planer is a more appropriate item for your drool list!;)

Dusty in Tucson has a good one. Maybe he will post a link to previous discussions of it.

Thought this needed a title for possible future reference.

Until Dusty responds, here is one from Nick Engler:

And the plans are attached.

Uh Huh:) It also TILTS!

Therefore any 'solution' must tilt with it.

Not as good as Dusty's, but a starting point.
