small building or shed questions

Hello,

Wanting to build a small building or shed to use as camp house at the hunting club. 10'x16' with a single slope roof (Shed roof?). I want the inside finished and insulated. My question is concerning the ceiling, how to insulate and finish as low cost as possible.

I think it is. This is the posters first posting. The lead in question is about a wood related project. Thus he has our interest. BUT - the link is to a web site that is interested in selling something that is not wood related.

If I were building it, I would make the roofline high enough so you can put in a level inside ceiling. Then you have an "attic" between the sloped roof and the level ceiling. The attic is the place for your insulation so the place is comfortable.

Yeah, I wish I had done that on my shop. Maybe not for insulation, but for storage.

I have renovated our hope with modern building techniques. Ventilating an attic is actually something that is something we don't do. We air sealed our place with closed-cell foam. As a result, out attic is only 6 degrees warmer in the summer than the temp of our upstairs floor. We installed a geothermal heat pump that is much smaller 48,000 BTU vs 80,000 BTU and we use solar power for electric to power it all. It's a 9,975 watt solar power system (~10KW) that results in our generating more power than we use & collect a credit from the electric company once a year.

Air sealing- especially the attic and walls will save you much in energy bills. But it's best done during construction. I opted for a huge company to do it, but you can easily do it yourself and do a combination of foam and fiberglass. Fiberglass 'breathes'. If you've ever seen fiberglass that looks black or dark- that is because there is an air leak & the fiberglass is acting as a filter, simply capturing the dirt & dust. So it's best to seal those leaks first & then use fiberglass or whatever you can find that is cheap.

You also need fresh air. For that we have an ERV-an energy recovery ventilator. But these are expensive methods. You can get Hilti Foam or Great Stuff in large containers and ensure every seam is sealed. Then fiberglass batts or blown in stuff sold by HD or L might help in keeping the cost to a minimum.

But for a hunting cabin, it would be a waste of money to do much considering the place wouldn't be used all that often. The answer to his question is to do the work himself or with his buddies and read as suggested by one of the other posters. "Alone in the Wilderness" is the story of a 50-some year old guy who built a cabin in Alaska and lived there for the last 30 years of his life. It's shown on PBS, but here is a link that shows how he built the place:

He used simple tools and made whatever he needed- including his own boards using simple wood working skills. No power for a Shopsmith! Just his own two hands and a few simple tools. It was interesting to watch never-the-less.
