Air sealing- especially the attic and walls will save you much in energy bills. But it's best done during construction. I opted for a huge company to do it, but you can easily do it yourself and do a combination of foam and fiberglass. Fiberglass 'breathes'. If you've ever seen fiberglass that looks black or dark- that is because there is an air leak & the fiberglass is acting as a filter, simply capturing the dirt & dust. So it's best to seal those leaks first & then use fiberglass or whatever you can find that is cheap.

You also need fresh air. For that we have an ERV-an energy recovery ventilator. But these are expensive methods. You can get Hilti Foam or Great Stuff in large containers and ensure every seam is sealed. Then fiberglass batts or blown in stuff sold by HD or L might help in keeping the cost to a minimum.

But for a hunting cabin, it would be a waste of money to do much considering the place wouldn't be used all that often. The answer to his question is to do the work himself or with his buddies and read as suggested by one of the other posters. "Alone in the Wilderness" is the story of a 50-some year old guy who built a cabin in Alaska and lived there for the last 30 years of his life. It's shown on PBS, but here is a link that shows how he built the place:

He used simple tools and made whatever he needed- including his own boards using simple wood working skills. No power for a Shopsmith! Just his own two hands and a few simple tools. It was interesting to watch never-the-less.

I hope those solar panels keep the shingles(if any) in the shade and there is air flow possible between them!

Who is 'Jacob?:D

We do tend to branch out on 'related' tangents quite often. We are quite a ways from the trunk(thread subject). Unless Jacob responds with a question or two(?) more we are likely to stay way out there or move in another direction.

If he never replies I could understand since we assumed some wrong things early on in this thread..

As I posted earlier, I don't believe Jacob is the least bit interested in what we say or think here on this forum. I suspect that Jacob builds (and maybe sells) web pages rather than wood projects..

If nothing else he got a decent discussion going.

On a side note several of the forums that I used to frequent are poorly moderated and have become filled with guys spouting their own hateful brand of politics and I have just quit going to them. I always bounce a number of people off of the batch of email list that I started up, especially on election years.
I do not want to even know what someone's politics are on a specialty forum. When that starts I just leave... (except on my lists, there I just do a few clicks and the problem is gone.

Sadly the pro spammers are getting smarter than they were a dozen years ago and I find that my spam fighting load gets heavier than it used to be.

I am also seeing a "LOT" more people trying to be some kind of guru and signing on a list just to direct traffic to their own blog. I allow a mention of a blog in their signature line but if I believe they have just signed on to use the list I toss them. Most of them post some very loose reference to the list subject then list their blog address.
After many years at it I can smell spam before the can is opened...
