What is a jackscrew
I am new to the Shopsmith. (not woodworking though) I have a ss Mark V/ 510 made in 1989. I have been searching through the manual and on line (I hate asking for help, my wife says I hate asking directions to.) For the life of me I can't figure out what the jackscrews on the edge of the tables are for. I figure for adding jiggs. Thanks for the help.

If this is one of the jack screws that you are asking about, this digital image should answer your question. This is maybe a misuse of the term, See the images below.

The jack screw secures one of the Shopsmith table rails to the tube that is used to tie them together. These tubes, when secured, stabilize the table top.

now I feel like a dumb a##
Jackscrew. A screw used to operate a jack. Not being cute here but that is the dictionary definition. The threaded cross shaft of a scissor jack used to raise a car is considered a jack shaft. Also the cross shaft of the old 10ER speed adjustment system can also be considered a jack shaft. Could also be extended to the wedge lock shaft in the headstock I suppose.

I find the 4 posts used for raising and lowering the thickness planer have been call jack posts or jack screws by some people.
