Shopsmith sandpaper

Lowe's has currently replaced ShopSmith sandpaper at some test stores throughout the United States. After the test period is over, then the ShopSmith abrasives will move back into the stores. Around 10% of the stores are affected, the other 90% are continueing to sell the ShopSmith abrasives.

ShopSmith abrasive are top quality abrasives with the professional woodworker in mind. The ShopSmith sanding belts are made with a ceramic grain. Most other sanding belts are made with an aluminum oxide or zirconium oxide grain.

I found some of the Shopsmith brand sandpaper at the Lowes on Valencia in Tucson. They also had the "gator" brand of which I have not been very impressed with. I plan on giving the Shopsmith brand a try. They went to 320 grit at Lowes. Does anyone know if they (Shopsmith) offer finer grits?

And yet, my order to Shopsmith for a ceramic grain belt has been on back order for more than 3 weeks. Maybe I should go to Lowe's.

FWIW, intrigued by this thread, I called both of my 2 local Lowe's here in Fremont, CA. Neither of them carried the Shopsmith paper. I was, however, able two order 2 Shopsmith ceramic belts on Lowe's website. Time will tell if I have any better luck getting the belts from Lowe's than I have from Shopsmith.

Someone on the ER group, posted recently that Lowe's was just now carrying SS sandpaper, after not carrying it, in his local store.

Can't remenber who or where, but just remember his post. It was in the last couple of days, though.

Maybe, SS is coming back!!:D (3rd or 4th time?) Hope so!

Maybe some folks got spoiled with the SS paper and refuse to buy the Gator stuff!

My guess is that Lowe's needs a more predictable supply chain than SS can provide, or it just did not sell well.

Got e-mail confirmation from Lowe's today that the 80 grit has shipped. No word yet on the 120 grit. That's the grit I have on back order with Shopsmith. Coincidence?

I always chuckle when I read discussions such as this one. One might come to realize that these new abrasives are so far ahead of others that they have become difficult to keep in stock. Which makes me thankful I stocked up when I first decided they were better. I do appreciate the warnings and am watching my inventory carefully. As for big box stores and grocers inventory practices. I will use Lime Juice as an example. Our local grocer comment last week that they always have trouble keep it in stock during hot weather as it is popular for summer drinks. Now in my feeble one would think that buyers plan by prior history to increase inventories to deal with past shortages. Apparently the major grocery chains don't believe in such inventory control. The big box stores always amaze me at how empty their shelves are. Perhaps they aren't concerned about making a profit. Jim
