Thanks Tim. I've accrued 11 Shopsmiths between Ebay, Craig's List, and people just knowing I collect anything Shopsmith. A friend gave me a 1955 Greenie. A guy in Northern NJ just sold a 10ER for $40. I learned about him only last night and he had already made an arrangement. I think he should of asked for more, but that was his choice. I've usually paid $50 for a 10E/ER depending on the condition. I figured I'd just shake the tree here & see what might fall out.
The problem with headstocks or the tubes is the shipping costs because of the size/weight.

So if anyone is looking to recycle some old way tubes, I'm interested. I'm looking to try the potato method of rust removal. This is a Mark V forum for all intents and purposes, but I figured if I didn't ask, I'll never get an answer. Just send me a PM if you have any old 10E/ER tubes. Thanks in advance.

I tried the potato method on a set of ER tubes. I didn't have much luck, but they were extremely rusted.

Perhaps it depends on the potato?

How long did you wait for the process to work? I've made up two 4" PVC tubes to soak my tubes. I'm considering electrolysis as well and a product called Evaporust. A while back someone had mentioned they used it. I searched and bought a concentrate in a 5 gallon container. It is cheaper to ship because there isn't much in the 5 gallon container & you simply fill it with water to get 5 gallons. Evaporust can be reused over & over again. But I plan to try the potato/oxylic acid method first as it is the most cost effective.

I want to look at chroming the tubes and other parts as there is nothing prettier than a chromed Shopsmith in my humble opinion. But it appears to be a hazardous process, so I might rethink it. I've been reading a number of posts and read on the Mark V, the way tubes have a different finish than the bench tubes and as a result, way tubes are more expensive than bench tubes. People have reported the bench tubes usually rust much quicker than the way tubes.

Electrolysis requires a large container and considerable sacrificial steel.

The Potato method requires a week or more time.

I only do the evaporust method and use 2" pvc tubes with 1" pvc tubes(capped) placed inside the tubes. That combination reduces the amount of evaporust required.

Overnite will derust all but the severely rusted ones.

Yes it is reusable, but will eventually be depleted.

HF is my source of choice. About $20/gal but with a 20% off coupon.....

Tony, I probably have some tubes, but there used to be a fellow in NY (Dave Ruggles) that sold Shopsmith parts. I think his ebay id was shopsmithparts. He is a good seller and it should be cheaper for you to get those heavy tubes closer to home.

I have an email address for Dave that is a couple of years old that I can share.

I've never chromed them but thinking might need to clean or lightly machine them if they have deep gouges or scratches. Then take in consideration the added layer of chromium and the diameter tolerance. You want that headstock and table carriage to slide.
