Drum Sand paper loading hint?

Post by saminmn »

I tried to use a 1 1/2" drum sander drill attachment and could not get it all the way on the cylinder. I had figured out that it had a right hand thread, so I had pressure released. Eventually I disassembled it so I could tap on the rubber cylinder to drive it the into the paper cylinder. When I had pretty well ruined the far end of the sand paper cylinder, I still had over a half an inch to go. It was far enough for the task at hand, so I used it.

Anyone have any tips for doing it right?:D

Relax the tension bolt when not using the drums. Keeping the drum compressed can cause it to take a "set" and they do not always recover from this condition. Try to roll the rubber cylinder on a bench top using a 2X4 and some pressure to get the cylinder to relax. If this does not work you can mount the sanding drum without a sleeve and run it at a low speed and sand the tight area with some coarse sandpaper to reduce the diameter slightly.
When I have a tight sanding sleeve I have used talcum powder to help ease it onto the drum.

After loosening the center bolt put the drum in your freezer for about an hour. The sleeve will slide right on.

Bill,

Thanks, I have also got the 2 1/4" drum and it is also tightened from PO. So, I will make sure it is loosened.

I will try rolling out the set on the inch and a half after the current sand paper is shot. I have some baby power for keeping hands dry when shooting pool; I'll try it next time there is a problem.

I was afraid use rubber and lubricant in original question after the vice lube question's responses:D

Thanks Steve. I had just started that a few minutes ago.

Do I know you? I lived in Omaha up until 4 years ago and worked out at Offit AB part of the time I was there. I am not good with names:(

Was a no go. :( It was on most of the way when I put in the freezer. I did get it down to under 1/4".

Will try next time, before loading a new cylinder.

You might also consider using a little soap. Or, perhaps a little STP or Armorall Protectant to help make it slippery. Plus, it should also help extend the life of your drum. Rubber starts to get hard over a period of time and stick/mold to one position (like somebody else mentioned here). The protectant would help to keep the rubber pliable longer.
