Hello everyone. My name is David and have been doing basic woodwork for a couple of years. Oh, and I will be most likely be getting a free ShopSmith and bandsaw add on this Saturday, along with around 16 lathe chisels with several having the ShopSmith logo on them.
A friend of a friend moved away and could not take his ShopSmith, so he gave it to my friend. My friend says all he really needs is maybe a small table saw, but figured I would have more use of the ShopSmith and the bandsaw. All for free. He has a very tiny shed that it is being kept in and does not really do wood working. I on the other hand have a small shed that I do wood working in. It is 15' by 9' on the inside. Sounds like I am the target market for ShopSmith. To be honest, I have not really heard of these machines, but have done a little bit of research. I currently do not have a bandsaw, nor lathe in my shop. I would like them, but also would like a jointer and planer so I can start buy rough cut lumber cheaper than "ready to use" lumber. I would not have room in my shop for all of these pieces. I am not really sure what to look for in one of these, but from what I have read and have been told, if it works, take it. I think there is going to be a bit of cleanup work to do. I do have a few pictures. My friend could not see the model number, but he things his friend told him he bought it in the 70's. Not sure if he has the manual.
Also does anyone know how much one of these weigh?
First, DO NOT CHANGE THE SPEED DIAL UNLESS THE SPINDLE IS TURNING!!!!!
Apart from that, it looks like some clean-up is in order. Most of us use JPW (Johnson's Paste Wax) after a good cleaning... it doesn't contain silicone. Very important if you are going to be running wood over it. I'll leave it to others to point out useful posts, etc.

Welcome aboard David! Congrats on coming into a SS and band saw.
I sympathize with you on shop size. I still have not figured out how I will make stuff fit into 9x13 room in basement. I will be putting tool storage and material storage on wheels as time goes on. I will then be able to move some of the space eaters out of the way when needed. Good luck with you setup, but with a couple of more feet of length, it will probably work out well.
I don't know weight, but son-in-law and I moved mine to the basement with no problem...might be tougher when I have to give it up a few years down the road:D
Did I see a carboy and brew kettle spoon in the first pic? All my brewing gear went into garage attic when I started WW and setting up a shop last Fall.

Welcome David, you will find lots of help here! We have resident experts on restoration, calibration, consternation and just about anything else you might want to know. Ask, some one can probably help, this is the cheapest, most fun education I have ever had!
If you have questions ask. I have never seen the forum stumped. Eventually, you will get an answer. Welcome to Shopsmith Madness. The good news is you are picking up one of the best supported woodworking tools available, (Both by the Company and in the form of this forum) many replacement parts are common, readily available and sometimes even inexpensive.

The other(non-original) does not have the word original on it!:D
The 'original formula' is slick. Good for ss, not so much so on floors.
