PTWFE Cross Reference to Self Study Course

I've dusted off my copies of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone and the Self Study Course. In the past, I could not figure out the cross referencing of the pages mentioned in the Self Study Course with my older copy of PTWFE acquired on eBay. Multiple times I have tried with no success and then just put them back on the shelf. I'm determined this time!:)

I have the "Self Study Course Cross-Reference" page already posted in these forums and included in my copy of the Self Study Course (also attached to this post for your reference).

My problem: the cross references are for the Revised and 4th Editions of PTWFE. Neither reference correlates to the relevant subject matter in my older copy of PTWFE. Perhaps my copy is an even earlier version than "Revised" or "4th Edition"? It has no ISBN, no copyright, no publisher, no publication date, or anything else to identify the edition. The only things that help ID it is that it has 324 pages, the address listed for Shopsmith in the front title page (as publisher?) is Vandalia, OH, and I have attached a picture of the cover to this post.

Question: Can anyone tell me what edition I have and if there is a Self Study Course cross reference resource for my edition of PTWFE? Or, do I just need to end my frustration by putting my copy in the SS museum archives and ordering a new and improved "Revised" or "4th edition" copy?

P.S. FWIW - Three random examples of my cross-referencing problems:

On Page 1-5 of the Self Study Course, it refers you to pages 52, 58-9 of PTWFE (Revised) and pages 24-29 (4th ed) on the subject of ripping long stock. In my copy of PTWFE, "Ripping Long Work" starts on page 26. Page 52, 58-59 in my copy deals with tongue and groove joints, making a saucer cut, and cutting spirals. Pages 24-29 deal with ripping in general.

On page 1-6 of the Self Study Course, it refers to page 53 of PTWFE (Revised) and page 22 (4th ed) regarding "Place right hand on miter gauge safety grip." under "How to Crosscut Lumber." In my copy of PTWFE, "Crosscutting" begins on page 14 with the illustration of the miter gauge safety grip on page 15. Page 53 deals with tongue and groove joints, and page 22 deals some with crosscutting.

On page 8-13 of the Self Study Course, it refers to pages 279-84 (Revised) and 225-30 (4th ed) for the uses of the Drum Sander. Pages 279-84 of my copy discuss the belt sander. Pages 225-30 discuss the jig saw and then the band saw. My pages regarding the drum sander are 268-273.

The PTWFE version you have is from the early fifties and 'features' a Greenie Mark 5.

The revised and fourth editions are later and 'feature' a Mark V.

The earlier version is completely reorganized in the later editions, so there is no direct correlation to the references.

The online PTWFE has the 4th edition pictured, but does not have numbered pages.

However the 'printer friendly' link appears to produce the same pages(albiet not numbered).

Each(almost)chapter has a downloadable pdf.

The chapter page numbers in the fourth edition are listed below

If you find yourself wanting to pickup a newer (1984) version, try Alibris.com. They have at least 10 copies that can be had for under $5. If you search for a coupon often you can get it for the shipping only, or about $3.99.

There are five editions of Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone for the Shopsmith Mark V as follows:

1. First edition: copyrite 1955 by Magna Publications features the original Mark V with no saw guard and 3/4 HP motor. It has 343 pages, ten chapters including spray finishing with the Magna Sprayer. This is the only edition that features spray finishing.

2. Second edition: no copyrite by Shopsmith Inc. is identical to the first edition but with only nine chapters and 324 pages. The spray finishing chapter ten has been removed.

3. Revised Edition: copyright 1984 by Shopsmith Inc. published by Reston Publishing Company. It features the Mark V model 500 with 1 1/8 HP motor and plastic lower and upper saw guards with 1 1/4" hose port. It has 360 pages, 20 chapters, and adds the thickness planer.

4. 4th edition: copyright 1989 by Shopsmith Inc. published by Shopsmith Inc. It features the Mark V model 510 with 1 1/8 HP motor. It has 325 pages with 25 chapters adding the lathe duplicator, scroll saw, strip sander, biscuit joiner, stand alone overarm pin router, and dust collector.

5. Online edition: same as 4th edition but the jigsaw chapter is removed.

I have all four printed editions because different fixtures and jigs are illustrated.

There is no edition at all that features the Mark V Model 520 or Mark 7 which is a major mistake being those are the current models being sold!

On the subject of PTWFE, the 10ER has its own version. I have a sixth printing of the 1953 copyright version. It has the price inside, $4.50. Need less to say it cost me more then that. I have 5 versions not counting the online version.

There is also an other version, geared to the Mk 7, called "Modern Power Tool Woodworking", which came out in 1967, published by Magna American Corporation. I stumbled upon it in a used book store, but I would guess it could be found somewhere in the vast inter-web.
