Scroll-Type Chuck & Jacob's Style Chuck

Post by GMH »

Does anyone know what a "Scroll-Type" chuck is?

Also, what is a "Jacob's" style chuck for tailstocks?

I am wanting to turn on my lathe, a blank that is similar to a pen/pencil blank (3/4" x 3/4" x 5"), without drilling a through hole. How do I chuck it up on my Shopsmith?

Thanks,
GMH

Chucks

Jacobs style chuck is like the one you drill with. Scroll chucks operate in a similar fashion, but are larger. Nova, Barracuda and OneWay are some brands that have models that adapt to the Shopsmith. My OneWay Talon will grip material from about 1/2" to about 2-1/2". If you have a longer piece of material, or a short tool rest, you can turn between centers and part off the excess.
