Wood Identification

Post by dusty »

I have some wood that was given to me but I am unsure as to what species it is.

It is hard, relatively heavy and cuts clean (no splintering). It was necessary to feed slow to avoid bogging down.

My wood pile is not large but there are some pieces that I am considering for use as new fences on my cross cut sled (which is under going some upgrades).

Looks like black cherry to me given the color and those small dark streaks or gum pockets.

I agree with Art on the right and lower left photos, but the upper left looks to me to be Black Walnut.

Looks like cherry to me as well.
One test for cherry is to lay a fresh cut piece in the sun for a couple of days (Dusty, do you get any bright sunlight in your part of the world  :D ). Cherry will begin to darken fairly quickly.... Cherry will also 'burn' easily, especially on rip cuts or router cuts.

The sun test would then indicate that this is cherry. I have a couple pieces that were laying out doors in the full sun. The top is much darker than the bottom.

It does burn too.

I'd agree it's cherry. Once in awhile finding a scrap pile, one could get confused looking at sap wood cherry. Sometimes could be very light toned or even wider looped grained.
