New Guy, Old Tool

Welcome to the forum. If you have been using it for 25 years I think you have gotten your moneys worth. I would like to find a shopsmith in a house that I bought.

Those bottle openers are absolutely beautiful (how did you attach the cork handle?).
I'm just trying to remember the last time I used one.
I did use a cork screw the other day but that was the first time in a couple of years.
As young men (long ago) most of us could show you maybe 6 different places on our cars where we could un-cap a bottle...

The inside edge of the bumper on the old Ford worked well but that was in the days of real bumpers. The flexible stuff used today probably won't do the trick.
No problem though. I don't remember the last time I had to remove a bottle top. Pop tops work great]Oops. We are not in "Community" and this is not "Beginning Woodworking".

I recognize it's shortcomings, but there is no way I would have acquired all the separate tools that the ER comes with. ...
Variable speed drive, I didn't even know what it was till last week, I still don't know how to use it.
Welcome aboard, this is a great group.
An additional source of information on the 10ER is the Yahoo group Shopsmith10ERusers. (note: when you join it may take a while for your membership to be approved and when you post there the message is checked by the moderator before it shows up on the forum. Skip (the moderator) is usually fairly prompt but if he is busy or away there can be a delay of several days.)
The Files section on that forum has a lot of documents and manuals of interest. I'll post the speed changer manual here to get you started]19765
(I tried to post the 10 ER manual also but kept getting errors)

dgale wrote:Since we're discussing the speed changer on a 10ER, I don't think it would matter if you turned the crank when it was off...obviously it wouldn't change the machine if it wasn't running but I don't think doing this would be problematic like it is with a Mark V.
Tell that to any guy that has broken 'ears'.
IMHO it is more prone to being damaged. It can be damaged even when running if adjusted too fast. It also does not care which direction when doing so. The adjusting shaft is 'spring' connected to the ears and if crank is forced with the springs fully compressed, the stress may cause an ear to break off.
One sees many on e-bay that have been 'fixed'.

Happy New Year! Thanks for the comments, I signed up for the Yahoo group but I haven't had a chance to visit yet. Here's some pics of work in progress:
Shape the "scales" to approximate finished size

Glue one scale to the opener blank, I use two part epoxy

I like to do a bunch at a time because of the set up of the SS issue

Drill through the blank & the first scale, then glue on the second scale. Drill through the first holes into the second scale, then pound in the pins. I'm using 3/16 nickel silver or brass

Saw off the pin and start shaping and sanding

These are probably the coolest bottle openers I have ever seen!Fun King wrote:The ones I am working on are ebony on one side and mahogany on the other. The pins don't go all the way through. They will be embellished with mandolin frets, and come out like this:

When I started I was trying to recreate a favorite opener that I lost. I was cutting and grinding blanks from "Speed Openers" I bought on-line. But this was tedious and expensive in metal cutting blades. I finally had the blanks manufactured to my specs out of 0.10" thick stainless.
