I finally have a Shopsmith
Moderator: admin
What year Mark V/model did you get? So what was wrong with the motor? Unless you smell the unique smell of burning motor windings, the motor might still have life in it unless you went from a 3/4 HP to a 1 1/8 HP motor. I read or heard on a video that the old 3/4 HP was just as good at the 1 1/8 HP motor.
Esnipe has bit me many times. Such is life. I try to stick to Craig's List whenever possible. But some deals on Ebay are too good to resist.

One Greenie, Two Mark 7s,Three 510s and much more…
Dusty,
I did a search on Ebay and only found a 1 1/8th HP motor that sold for $66; nothing for $69.

Looks like a nice motor.

Yup, that's my motor. Well, at least I thought it was my motor. I had already kicked myself around the shop for bidding the way I had. If I had really "needed" the motor, I would have gone after it more aggressively. But it was advertised as working but making an unwanted noise. A working motor for that price was just irresistible. What surprised me was there were so few bidders. $66 and not $69, that's even worse.

Dusty you've discovered a sad fact of eBay. It's called sniping. There is software available that allows you to specify auction, max bid and number of seconds before auction ends. The software then does the bidding for you automatically. One version of the software is called sniperight and I know there are others.dusty wrote:Congratulations on your Shopsmith and on your eBay win. But I have a question. Are you the guy who beat me out of that motor at the very last second of bidding about two weeks ago?:( I thought I had a steal and then lost it literally in the last 5 seconds.

You're kidding me? I've been using ebay for years wondering how I get outbid at the last second. Thats pretty shady! Thanks for the info.

This is one service:
http://auctionsniper.com/
Few people truly understand the entire concept and think that if they just bid the maximum that they are willing to pay that nothing else matters. They are wrong and will continue to lose many of the things that they really want. It is the speed of bidding and the timing that makes these things work, and they do work.
I'm not saying that I like the whole idea but if you don't want to always be outbid by the huge numbers of people using such services you adjust to help level the field.
I have been going to auctions of all kinds since I was a kid and I can tell you that there are many things involved that most folks don't know about. Mostly timing, psychology, etc. than can affect the bidding even in real on location auctions.

Yeah. Auctions can be tricky. Especially, when you have (what I call) high powered bidders in the mix. And I suspect on a site like EBay, there can be several high powered bidders hidden in the wings.
I personally like Craig's list better myself but they also don't have the volume of listings. Plus, I like to physically see the item before I buy. I also don't like the required Pay Pal Avenue for my purchases. I tried them once and was bitten by scammers.

This is the site I use:
http://www.bidnapper.com/
For me it's more the convenience of placing a maximum bid and then not think about it until after the auction ends...it bid for me with <10 seconds left and I don't have to remember to do anything and I don't get caught up in bidding wars or make bad decisions in a competitive environment. I'm amazed how many folks sit there and bid each other up on items, often with a couple of folks ending up placing 20-30 bids total on an item before it closes. This often results in folks paying way more then I would want to pay for a used item...frequently approaching 80-90% of the new cost from SS. I'm not interested in getting caught up in that - I see an item of interest, I place my max bid on bidnapper and if my maximum isn't already exceeded by the time the item closes, it will place my bid for me...if I get it, great, if not, no big deal on my end.
