$100 Shopsmith
Well, I couldn't help but take advantage of a work trip to The Sacramento area in a big work truck to do a bit of SS hunting on the way. Only have made it to Willits (~half way to SF) before I made my first acquisition...a 10e serial #4314 in great condition and well cared for. I got it for $100 and will add it to my growing fleet. Photos to follow once I get to my hotel later. Now I just have to resist the temptation to look for any others before I return home.
Here's a photo of the 10E I picked up today.

He had lost the lathe tool rest/banjo but otherwise pretty much everything is there and virtually no rust. I can't wait to get it home. One of my 10E's will become a full-time lathe and the other a full-time drill press, leaving my Mark V to do table saw and SPT duty. I only have one speed changer between the two 10E's - would I be better off putting it on the lathe machine or the drill press machine? Seems like it would be more useful on the lathe but I'm curious what others think.

I'm in the same situation. I have a 10ER as a dedicated drill press, and another one as a lathe (and other functions). I have a speed changer I haven't yet rehabbed and have been undecided which one to put it on. But I've decided on the lathe. Larger turnings like bowls would benefit from the slower speeds available with the speed changer. The only reason I would need slower speeds on the drill press is if I were drilling metal. The few times I might do that, I can just put the "lathe" 10ER in drill press mode.dgale wrote:I only have one speed changer between the two 10E's - would I be better off putting it on the lathe machine or the drill press machine? Forstner bits are the other time I would want slow speed with a drill press but not something I will probably use very often...you're right, I can always use the lathe machine as a drill press in the infrequent occasions where a slower speed is neededheathicus wrote:I'm in the same situation. It's my understanding that you can purchase pulleys with more than 3 sizes that would give you more options on speeds for the unit that doesn't have the speed controller. Or different sizes that would give you the slower speed you are looking for when required.

The ER headstock pulley uses a 13/16" bore (IIRC) rather than the more standard 5/8" (which the motor pulley uses). So replacing that pulley could be difficult and expensive. Or maybe not. I haven't really tried.

In that case could you not just change out the motor pulley with one that has a smaller small pulley which would provide lower rpms, assuming that you can go smaller.
