Reasonable value for used MV

You made a wise decision; however, you might want to check back with her every month and after the second month give her some info from eBay and Craigslist. Be supportive and let her know how much you would like to buy it from her (after you have seen it and checked it out).

I have given my wife instructions that should I die and she wants to sell my SS that she advertises it as a grieving widow with 5 children, all under the age of 6 and no life insurance.

I would encourage you to by a new Shopsmith, Buying a old machine and upgrading is hard to be worth-ed, now that the power pro is there. I have a "like new" 510 and probably gonna buy a new machine instead of doing all they upgrade and still have and old machine(frame, way tube etc...). Shopsmith is a fantastic machine in my opinion and I would not hesitate paying for a new one. About for the price of and old machine, you guys would not buy around here I bought my Shopsmith for 1000$, 1993 model 500 with a band saw, witch was a great price. Depending where you live the price can change a lot.

Oh, I'm planning on buying a new one. I'm waiting for the next demo at Lowes in my area first. But I was thinking, why not buy a used machine with a lot of accessories for cheap so I won't have to buy the accessories new from SS. I realize upgrading an old machine with pro fence, 2way tilt, & PP would only be slightly less than a new machine.

I know you are on the right path - thinking you are going to be buying new. Yes the temptation to buy cheap may be strong, but getting a machine you know, for certain that it works and all parts are new can avoid a world of frustrations of trying to find the part or parts that make noise or are are just not working. Inadequate lubrication is probably the biggest cause of hardships because of worn parts.

Cheap doesn't always amount to inexpensive! The same goes for special use tools.

Also one cannot beat the instruction manuals that come with new. AND you cannot beat the warranty on NEW!

Well, my plan is to buy the used machine just for the accessories and then buy a new PP when I can finally touch and feel it up close in action at a demo. I know that they discount at the demo's. Besides, if an accessory that I aquire happens to need some work, I'm all about work. I am a master auto technician by trade, so I'm sure anything a SS can throw at me should not be a problem. I am more at home with metal than I am with wood.

And there's always plenty of help from you guys...RIGHT?

Unless there are problems buying repair parts direct from SS, I don't see a problem. Of course, I've already have been looking around Ebay at all the parts available, and yes, comparing prices to new.

The accessories that I would want to aquire is: bandsaw, planer, jointer, belt sander, scroll saw, and maybe a power station. I figure that will be the cheapest way to get some of them if I buy a used machine. I can alway resell the used MarkV extra cheap.

We'll just have to see.
