More horsepower (5/8 hp extra) and the cuts per inch are higher -3000-4100 vs the Pro Planner has 5,750. The Pro Planner also has the cast iron table. The Pro Planner isn't a space saver or light, but you also don't have to lift it off the machine either.pieceseeker wrote:Yea, the planer I think would be a very useful SPT to have around. You talked about the pro-planer being the better choice on planers.
Is there any difference between the pro and the MarkV mount style planer other than the pro on its own stand having a 1 3/4 hp constant speed motor and slightly different feed speeds. What about the SS mounted one if you had the PP headstock running on 240v, would that have as good of performance?
Thoughts from you on a few SPT's

There was an earlier 1 1/2 hp version which used different pulleys(slower).
There was also a ss mount version that had manual feed.
The ss mount versions had a lighter aluminum table.

What I am trying to achieve when buying a used MarkV, is getting the most bang for my buck as far as SPT's are concerned. Buying SPT's individually used may be more expensive than if bundled with a MarkV.
Most used MarkV's out there are coming with a bandsaw and jointer, but a few are coming with up to 4 SPT's and priced anywhere from $850 to $1200.
If a 510 in very good condition came with a:
Bandsaw
Jointer
Planer on pwr stand
Scrollsaw
would $1200 be a deal, a steal, or keep looking?
Personally, it sounds like a deal to me!
What do you think?
I like that assortment of tools. It is basically what I have purchased for myself over the last couple of years, and I don't myself NEEDING more. Just as a data point I paid about 1250 to get my Shopsmith 510 and those SPTs. (I do have the Dewalt Scroll saw instead of the Shopsmith one. I love it, but I think the shopsmith one is probably in the same class.)
When shopping for shopsmith stuff keep in mind all the small stuff that might get thrown in / is missing can swing value a fair bit. Extra saw blades (or a dado set) in good condition, router bits, lathe tools, etc can be nice bonus items that you would have found adding up quickly if you acquire them separately. Look for missing safety kit pieces, and accessories as bargaining chips to negotiate down the price.
I'd say $1200 would be a reasonable price if it included the planer. Make sure the bandsaw you buy has the aluminum table
