You'll be fine kerfing it if you have to but because the kerfs will be on the outside radius, you will weaken it more than the pieces in my case. If you were to glue anything, even a veneer or thin strip around the back after bending it would help. All in all the best would be two 1/4" pieces if you can manage it.
Varnish isn't much of a sealer but you're planning to take care of the boat so I wouldn't expect any problems.

I'm a big fan of West System marine-grade epoxy for sealing items like this:

This is true, but it brings up another point. The boating industry has been moving away from using wood (even marine grade) in structural components because as soon as you get a crack you start the rotting process. It's been basically eliminated other than the transom board on tiller models and ultra-economy boats. All of our decks, hatches, etc. are now made out of aluminum or poly. That might be out of your budget, but if you're concerned with longevity of the plywood then its a good option.shipwright wrote:They weren't rotting because they weren't marine plywood. West Systems makes a good product, but epoxy resin and catalyst is really a commodity and they have a huge markup because of good distribution and simple instructions the lay person can follow. If cost is an issue, and it always should be, check out US Composites. Similar products, half the price. I don't personally use them because I have a wholesale account elsewhere, but they are a good place to go if you are needing anything more than a half gallon.

Call me a traditionalist. It's an argument I will avoid. I'll stick with my signature line on the other forum:

Haha I'm with you there, but he also didn't give us aluminum trees. And its hard to make a 100ft motor yacht with 5000+ hp out of wood. When I was working in fiberglass and living on the coast, I was going to build a 24' sailboat that slept 4 from plans published in the 1940's in Popular Mechanics. No modern tools or materials, even the laminated parts were glue and canvas. Had a few construction engineer buddies that were into the whole antique handtools and woodworking thing that gave me the idea. That's actually the reason I bought the SS to begin with.

What about buying some veneers and laying up a laminated piece to fit the bill? Just thinking outloud.
