Stool-Circle cutter

Post by mrhart »

Over the weekend I was working on a slab of wood for my grand daughter who needs a stool to play her guitar, so she can be just like Taylor Swift. I have the old cast bandsaw and I was trying to throw together a quick circle cutting jig. I have a piece of plywood with a finish nail in it and the block of wood is centered on that (same nail). It pivots and swings well.
When clamping that whole mess onto the cast table, I need suggestions on, how to square up to the blade 90degrees so it cuts on my line. And where on the blade is the point to measure from? The leading edge of the teeth I suppose?
Anyone have an easier way to do this or set up to do this?
I have a country star who needs a maple stool :D

Manually band saw it just outside the line and use disk sander to trim to the line.

Use a jig saw(hand held) with a 'radius' bar etc.

If ya got a 10ER, mark 5 or Mark V 500, use the rip fence hole/dead center 'trick' to sand.

This is my solution to your task of cutting circles.

Don't look for the center pin, there isn't one yet. I just remade this table extension and have not yet cut any circles (thus no pivot point). This works up to 23 1/2" (limited only by the length of the item being cut.

I do NOT have the right blade installed on the band saw either. I would use nothing larger than a 1/4" to cut a circle the size of a typical stool (12").

CAUTION: When cutting larger circles it becomes necessary to support the outer end of the jig table. The telescopic leg works well for this.

Ahhh yes! Now I remember one that a forum member(Mbcabinetmaker???) made with a sliding pin holder.

I do not have a CI table, but is clamping a problem with it???

WoodSmith at url http://www.plansnow.com/bandsaw.html has a plan for an adjustable bandsaw circle cutting jig.

I have one on Sketchup for my SS bandsaw and as soon as as the boomerang family (2 adults, 2 beautiful young ladies:) ) leave for Charleston SC (again) I will start to build it.

Right now, not even SWMBO can get he car in the garage so my SS is up against the wall for the next 2 months. Having withdrawal pains.

Here's my unit, no idea where the plans came from, I'm guessing just from memory of several units. I support one end with one of those units from HD I think. Through a couple trials I determined that I need that red line to line up with the teeth and then I get a decent circle. On the back I used an old miter gauge bar. Not shown are the spring clamps: 1. holding the jig to the bandsaw table so the whole thing doesn't walk away when it's running and 2. one to hold the adjustable centering pin in place. I don't use this often, but it's worked just fine
