Has anybody used the standard Cole Jaw set on a Mark V with the standard speed selector. It says not to use over 600 RPM while the Mini Cole Jaw set says it can go up to 800 RPM. I recently picked up a Nova G3 and want to be able to use the Cole Jaw set to finish the bottom of the bowl after finishing the inside.

I think that there is a SS speed reducer on E-Bay. This will get you down to about 100 RPM. However I don't think the extra 100 RPM will pose a difficulty as your almost finished bowl should be pretty well balanced. Just stand out of "the line of fire" when you do the final finishing!!:D

I have both sets. I do however also have the speed reducer as well (now) a powerpro.
I normally take rpm ratings very seriously. Other factors like how deep the bowl is also play into the safety. Doing the back of a say a dish is quite different then doing a 4" deep bowl.
Like wise the actual diameter of the bowl could be a factor. So if the bowl mounts on the mini and can spin at 800 rpm I'd expect the same size bowl could be done on the larger jaws at the same speed........ but I do not know that to be a fact.
From a pure safety point of view I'd think about the addition of a speed reducer and or a powerpro over guessing things will be safe.

I have the Jumbo Jaws for the Oneway Talon chuck. They are 11" in diameter when the chuck is fully closed, and are marked as 1000 rpm max. I normally finish the bottom of bowls at speed dial letter "C" (950 rpm). Being cautious (a.k.a. chicken), I take the extra precaution of taping the bowl rim to the jumbo jaws. A catch can pop the bowl loose enough to be out of balance, but the tape prevents it from flying off completely and hitting the floor (or me).
