The 510 main table is useless without the trunnions BUT the two floating tables (with the fence attached) are good just like they are. How so? Can't be used with the 500 set up. I'll bet you could sell the 510 main table without trunnions, the two floating tables, the fence, the saw guards, and the connecting tubes for $100 easily.
My thoughts above in red.

I didn't mean to say the floating tables would work with a 500 setup, I meant more that the floating tables don't appear to be missing parts.

My gut feeling is to pass on this deal. I don't see a bandsaw blade and who knows what else is missing on the bandsaw. There are some fairly good deals out there in the $300 range which have all the required parts and look like they are in working order. You could spend several hundred bucks on E-bay acquiring all the pieces needed to get this unit up and running. If the motor runs and the speed control is not stripped I might offer $50 if I was looking for a restoration project. But if you want to get to work asap, I don't think this is for you :p

I MAY agree with this. Check it out first. Make a note of everything that is missing or doesn't work. Prices vary depending on your location. Locally the sellers are crazy and have posted SSs and parts for more than two years with no price change. Price stays the same while it deteriorates. They are crazy. Make a note of everything that is wrong, missing and ask about the last maintenance and what was done. When you get a blank stare, long pause or "huh" you know you can negotiate down. However, you need to know what should have been done, what is missing and what is wrong. This is your source. Do your research here and wherever you can. An ounce is prevention is worth 100 pounds (British currency) of cure.

If you buy something you will be tempted to correct everything on eBay. Don't. Only buy when you are not in a bidding war and the price is cheap. Never, never, never, ever get in a bidding war. It ain't about ego and winning. It's about getting the best deal. Let it pass; another will come along. If you don't absolutely have to have it you don't need it.

While we can't post things for sale here there seem to be no rules that say we can't request information from someone who has something to sell. That's not in the agreement you clicked onto and didn't read.

So if you want something, just post "Wanted" (but not dead or alive) only alive.

No jointer but there's an old style blade guard from a jointer...this this is too much of a hodge-podge of duplicate parts and missing parts and mismatched parts, not to mention a machine that looks like it's spent too much time in the moist PNW air. That bandsaw's not worth much in my books - it's weathered, missing some parts, and has the old cast iron table, which is less desirable than the aluminum table. I'd wait for a more complete/better condition machine to come along. I'd potentially be interested in a cheap rehab project if I already a SS or three but I don't think this is the machine I'd jump on for my first...I'd say go check out that $400 510 in Aurora and see how complete and in what condition it is.

'82 Mark V 500 #96309
Two '47 10E's (serial#4314+6149) - one a dedicated drill press and the other a lathe
Two 10E/ER in parts slowly being restored…#26822 and #????? (SS plate missing)
SPT's: Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, Jointer, Jigsaw, Biscuit Joiner

Thanks again for the replies everyone. I am still amazed at the amount of knowledge you have about this crazy machine.

I was hoping to get a shopsmith that had at least a working drill press/lathe and hopefully bandsaw, right off the bat and could acquire pieces for the rest. This one seems to be too much of a gamble.

I sent the seller in Aurora (Model 510 for $400) an email. The $400 price tag is out of my range and he said he is firm on it. But I let him know that if it didnt sell at that price and he started thinking about lowering/negotiating that I would be interested. I am really hoping to not spend more than $250 on a setup.
He replied and said that if in a few days there wasnt much interest he would contact me. *fingers are crossed*

If you could get that 510 at $250, you would be doing very well. I think I'd be all over that deal at $400 but I understand budgetary constraints (read: spouse and kids :D ). Tell her about all the $ you will save with the things you will build for her and the kids.

ALSO comes with a Large Drum to catch the wood chips and dust, so as not to have a mess to clean up...

That's from the 510 ad... SURELY that's not referencing a dust collector?! I know it's not but I'm curious to see what it actually is.

If you can't pull the $400 together for the 510, I would not buy the 500 basketcase. The market there seems much better for buyers than where I am. Another will come along if you miss out on this one. Besides, you will probably spend $400 or more fixing up the basketcase.

I do this quite often, contact a seller and tell them they have a standing offer of $x, and make a point that I have cash in hand, won't haggle or gripe about imperfections, can load and haul by myself, and my availability and amount of forward notice needed. Then I maintain radio silence until they call me back.

Like clockwork, those $400 firm people will call and accept $250 within a week or two, sometimes the same day. Either they find something they want to spend the money on immediately, or bills are due, or the realize how much of a PITA it is to deal with buyers on Craigslist.

And above all, don't let emotion become part of making a deal. If this weeks ads aren't the right deal for you, there will be more for sale next week. Don't let the seller think he has any leverage by being too eager.
