Table question

I just bought a 1980 mark v the table top has two slots. What is the one nearest the edge for?

In 1982 when at age 18, I bought a new mark v ,And it didn't have two slots.

At least when you were 18 there was such a thing as a Mark V.

My 1978 Mark V which I acquired from my older brother in the 90's has the edge blade slot. My 1982 Mark V which I purchased that year doesn't have it. I've never used the second slot on the '78' machine, nor did I ever think much about it being there, just that it helped me identify which table I had on which machine. Regardless, I like this thread as I've learned something. Thanks.
