Sending disc adhesive
I have recently purchased a machine with a number of sanding disc plates. My problem is that the sanding discs have been put on the plates with an adhesive which makes it practically impossible to remove the sand paper. Is this normal? If so what is the best thing to remove the sandpaper. Further to that thought I understand there's a Velcro system is that a good idea?

If really really really old(10E/ER, Greenie vintage) a really really really stubborn 'adhesive' was used. I would go with the lacquer thinner also. Yes gasoline will also work(be very very very careful!)
Opinions vary re the velcro. With 'a number of disks', I question the need for velcro disks.
I prefer no velcro. The velcro acts like a spongey base for the paper, and can be damaged by excessive heat. If using the disk for chisel sharpening, the velcro becomes undesirable(spongey thing). JMHO

In the referenced thread Dusty puts his in the sun. Remember, Dusty lives in Tuscon.
We don't get that kind of sun much of the year here. Also my shop is in the basement and only has outside exposure to the north. I like a common full sized heat lamp... Be sure to place everything on a non-flammable surface especially if you have tendencies to be absent minded like I do. Actually I am fond of timer switches for a lot of things and like them more all of the time.

I tried the velcro, a LONG time ago. I got the same issue. The sponginess left corners nice and rounded over. Not too good for gluing up stuff.JPG40504 wrote: Opinions vary re the velcro. With 'a number of disks', I question the need for velcro disks.

I'd rather have a few discs, (like the 8 inch one that got lost in the fire.)

That adhesive was heat activated, and was made to be removed by running the plain disc, and rubbing a block of wood over it, to make it melt. But, that was back in the 1950's. (It's probably dried rock hard by now.)JPG40504 wrote:If really really really old(10E/ER, Greenie vintage) a really really really stubborn 'adhesive' was used.

Maybe distic(stick shellac) or latex(liquid rubber).
The shellac should be alcohol dissolvable. The latex should rub off.
At least when reasonably 'fresh'!:D

disc adhesive
Once the paper is off the disc, try GooGone, then finish up with lacquer thinner or mineral spirits.
