New Old mark V

Just bought 1985 mark v and was cleaning it as the speed dial was hard to turn,reaching in hole to removed dust from gear and took hand back out and saw a role pin and a small metal pc with spring on it,had come from speed control cant tell if it goes on end of shaft. Could use some help please.And thanks!!

Be advised the usual cause is inadequate lubrication of the upper sheave. Plan on doing a tear down and cleaning and oiling everything before trying to operate. Also check the pork chop and do Bill's repair, which is discussed in the link you will find in the above thread.

The tension pin goes in a hole in a button in a bearing at the end of the control sheave. The u shaped piece(with spring like 'roller') goes in the ends of the tension pin. The spacing of the ends of the u shaped piece should be close to the length of the tension pin(if too much greater, squeeze them back).

Now as to the cause of them coming out.

Lack of lubrication, and/or turning the speed dial with the pulleys stationary(not rotating).

Add Lubrication of the control sheave(and the floating sheave[on the motor shaft]) to your cleaning(and reassembling) task.

No, either movable sheave can cause this. The loop should NEVER be pulled by the porkchop assuming the sheaves are adequately lubed and the control knob operated correctly(slowly towards slow).
