Looking for advice before purchasing a Shopsmith

The google search I did of the phone number shows that it's an auction place and their site says they have auctions on Thursdays, so maybe I missed it by a day.

So how do I tell the difference between a V and a 510?
For instance, I see these ones, are any of these 510s, how do I tell?

Those are all 500's. You can tell a 510 by the tables. 510 has extension steel tubes on the front and back of the tables. They are all tied together by smaller tubes that fit inside the larger table tubes. The 520 has extruded aluminum stiffeners on the tables. The same connector tubes for the 510 are used with the 520 to tie the tables together. Makes a solid stable table system.

Also, the tables on the 510 and 520 are much larger to begin with.

Those are all "500's" -- the original style of Mark V. They have a small rectangular bar along the edge of the table where the fence clamps.

510's have much larger round tubes instead of the rectangular bars.

520's have a beefy squarish extrusion to serve that purpose.

The work surface of both 510's and 520's can be expanded by the use of floating tables.

Thanks all! So to clarify, those top tubes are attached directly to the table portion, then the additional extensions slide into that? That large crank wheel on the front seems to start with the 510 as well, or not?

The first two are Mark V 500's.

The third is a Mark 5(greenie to be more specific).

Yes the crank came into being with the Mark V 510 and is also on a 505 or a 520. A 505 is a 510 without the two floating tables, telescoping legs or connecting tubes.

The 'third' will likely have 3/4 hp motor and a Gilmer drive.

A 520 has different rails(square/boxy) and a bigger rip fence.

The bottom rails(bench tubes) merely hold the ends together.

Both the headstock and a carriage for the main table slide on the upper rails(way tubes). Both are free to move within the adjacent area not occupied by the other.

The crank(or a lever on older models) raises and lowers the main table. The outer extension table is manually adjusted vertically and has a separate clamp. The extension table is mounted on either end in the SPT mounting holes.

BTW the greenies and early goldies had a cast in rail for the rip fence.

If you want to use your SS as a table saw than wait for a 510 or 520 - 510's are more common on the used market and will likely be priced more affordably in the $500-$1000 range. As for the original greenie you were looking at, looks okay but price is too high - I wouldn't pay more that $200-$300 for it and that's only is it runs good. The jigsaw is not a big deal in terms of value - they can be bought for <$100 quite readily. Take your time, hunt around, read up on all the various machines and SPTs (specialty tools) that might come with it, and ask lots of questions.

I am new to the forum and I have just posted my 1988 Mark V 510 on Craigslist as well as other Shopsmith items. These items were given to me by my late step-father but I do not have the spare time right now to take up woodworking. I am hoping to sell the entire lot of tools together. Take a look.

First let me say welcome.

Second let me say: not a good way to enter.

If you had spent some time here prior to revealing craigslist, you would be aware that 'not selling' is something we all agreed to when we 'joined'. Our very generous sponsor does not want trading post activity occurring. That said, the sponsor be quite tolerant so yer link will likely survive.

Also if you had spent some time lurking here you would realize that folks here are quite up to speed regarding what used SS stuff will realistically bring.

Although you are attempting to sell essentially new stuff for half of new cost, it is not likely to bring anywhere near that.

I think you would have better luck selling it piecemeal. JMHO
