What are the different cuts of lumber?
And what are the advantages and disadvantages of the different types?

I have not done the research to verify that the answers to yours questions are there but I believe you will find them all covered on this website by Nick Engler.
Please let me know if this helped.
The site has not been very active lately and Nick has apparently been too preoccupied to update the site but it is still packed with a wealth of information. I just hope that it is never taken down. If you have not been there, I would encourage everyone to sign in and browse the site. Maybe an increase in activity will draw Nick back.

Nick activated that site at about the same time that he quit doing the Sawdust Sessions. Even though it is not be expanded these days, I often find myself going back to it for information.pieceseeker wrote:Hey thanks Dusty for that link, I didn't know about it.
You can also post there if you are patient enough to wait for someone to respond. Member participation is low, unfortunately.

What is an advantage or disadvantage of the "cut" is mostly dependent on the intended use of the particular cut of wood (board). I say "mostly" because some woods can appear quite differently on their face, depending on the cut from the log.pieceseeker wrote:And what are the advantages and disadvantages of the different types?
An understanding of wood movement is a basic understanding of woodworking. http://workshopcompanion.com/KnowHow/De ... vement.htm

Here is a link to a 509 page PDF from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Lab.
Page 75 has reference to plainsawn and quartersawn. It also has a reference to bastard sawn, or riff sawn as it is usually referred to.
There's a wealth of information in it....if you have the patience to sort thru it.

Thanks. Downloaded it and briefly browsed chapt 10. Did you know that 80 grit sandpaper works better than 320 grit for surface prep when gluing? That not-sharp planer blades are as bad or worse than rough cut wood?bffulgham wrote:Here is a link to a 509 page PDF from the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Lab.
