Wood carving time

I keep busy carving and whittling on wood. The Shopsmith helps me get things shaped to start.
I just finished up a cane commemorating the Colt M1911 and some of the battles that the USMC used it in during 4 wars.

How’s the local constabulary feel about these?

I’m pretty sure that no one in New York could expect to travel 1/4 mile from their front door before being surrounded on all sides by police with weapons drawn demanding that cane be immediately dropped and your hands raised above your head.

I mean, that’s some Dillinger-quality carving right there.

I haven't used it yet, but around here, it shouldn't be much of a problem. People here still carry rifles and shotguns in the window of their pickup trucks in plain sight.

I hope to live long enough so I need it some day, and then I'll find out. Who would worry about an old worn out man anyway?

Yes, that might put a bit of worry into them, but once they inspect it, it is plain that it is simply wood.

OK, when children are expelled, banished and even tazed, for making the "gun" sign with your fingers, do you think this is OK? There was a small girl, that mentioned that she wanted to play with some friends, and her "bubble gun" who was expelled.

Don;t misunderstand me, the cane looks AWESOME, and I want one! When I was a youngster, me and a friend made a pen gun in metal shop. The teacher HELPED us! Kids would compare their firearms, in the parking lot, with the teachers.

Gary, if you ever feel the need to make some copies, post back here. (I'm interested!)

Well IMHO your examples illustrate some problems with the 'mentality' of those we have entrusted to educate our offspring. Zero tolerance has become a byword and is an excuse to not ever have to make a judgement call. Only one who has no sense of their own ability to make good decisions would encourage such folly.
