Not only did I carry a Boy Scout knife every day of my high school time, but (I think I mentioned this earlier) the metal shop teacher HELPED me and a friend make a WORKING pen gun. Wasn't very accurate, we couldn't hit a 2 foot diameter tree, any further away than 6 feet. It was more of a point blank weapon. But, it did shoot!
About Basic, NEVER go during the winter. I hit Ft McClellan in May, and Ft Gordon (for AIT) on the 4th of July weekend. (Got there Friday, inprocessed, and they said, be back on Tuesday.) (Could have been Thursday and Monday, was 30-ish years ago.)
