New to using a SS and have some ?

Newbie to the site. Have done some (not much) woodworking and I just got a 1955 Mark V in fairly decent shape from what I can tell, it runs well and the belts look OK to me, I've read several threads on oiling and generally checking the machine and have come up with some noob ?'s. On my SS there is no opening under the name plate so how exactly do I cut an opening in the headstock without completely dismantling it? ON my SS the motor is bolted, screwed down onto the bottom of the headstock, is that right? There is no locking mechanism for the vertical, drill press position, is there supposed to be one? I plan on using the SS for pen making almost exclusively so what pieces should I look at getting? The machine came with a bunch of parts that I have no idea what they are for, I've figured out some of them and how they work, but extra knobs and other parts I haven't a clue, maybe as I use it it will all come clear. Welcome to the forum Mike. The lock is just a knob with threads that screws into the base, in the offset hole to hod it. PICS wood be nice of the "bunch of parts".

too many parts and too many Martinis!!!!! Some are SS parts and some are not, not going to explane, go to SS web site here I think and go through there stuff.
Glad you are here, plenty of advice and more then plenty of expertise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's some Model 10 stuff in there, as well.

In the third picture, most of that stuff works on the 10ER, except the long black thing at the top. That threaded rod with the crank on the end, is a 10ER table raiser crank, and won't be useful on a Mark series, same with that "T" shaped bracket with the slotted hole in it. (It's a 10ER ext table bracket.) The sanding drum and the mortise parts will work with your Mark series stuff, but look like Series 10 stuff, too.

In the 4th picture, that piece of rubber hose with the aluminum ends is the adapter to drive the Model 10 jigsaw. The 3 inch faceplate looks like it is Model 10, too, but it'll work just fine on your machine.

The threaded rod looks to be one of the many adaptations of the hold-down on the miter gauge, or part of it.

About the saw blade arbors, if they fit your spindle, (if they're designed for a 5/8ths plain spindle) they will work on any model. (Regardless of what Shopsmith says.)

(Oh, I haven't had as many "adult beverages" as Bob has.

SOUL I recinisids the ER 10 stuff too. bit in my previous post too many Martinis!!!! Good eye!!!My 57 Greenie came with the same SPT coupling!!!

NICE looking Greenie!

FWIW, an "A" headstock. They do not have the 'access' hole. They did not have the sheave oil holes either(originally). Drop the motor PAN to lube.

The 5/8" hub fits on the end of the idler shaft.

Skoul you are on a different time zone, here in the Midwest, 5 O Clock starts a bit earlier then by you, now Saturdays and Sundays is an other story, and when Packer football starts its Bloodies Marries at 10AM!!!!
