New guy ? on he headstock lock.

I've the SS for about a week and today the lock that stops the headstock from moving totally froze up which resulted in breaking the tightening handle from the threaded rod. I had to remove the headstock from the tubes and cut the rod in two. The question is, how in the world do I put the new carriage lock assembly back in? This is a 1955 Mark V 500. Thanks.

You run the wedges max towards the center.

This allows insertion of one end and clearance for the other end.

Then the wedges are moved outward towards the end the same distance to approximately the operating position.

The wing nut is installed on the operating end with the tension pin after aligning the wingnut hole with the hole in the leadscrew.

The wingnut is removed from the old leadscrew by driving the tension pin out.

With a new leadscrew, you may need to drill the hole.(I have never had a

new one).

I like to move the wedges out as far as they will go and adjust the amount of protrusion of the operating end by moving the wedges one at a time.

P.S. If it is a 1955, it is a Mark 5 Greenie.
