Made coasters out of a log.

Been using my newly acquired Shopsmith for random projects and decided to make some coasters! This stalk was sourced from a log i picked up off the side of the road. Really utilized the Shopsmith and its versatility. Did this in a few hours and it was pretty fun. Here are the photos: http://imgur.com/a/LLylm

Nice project. BBBBBUUUUT. In that one pic where your turning the log, your tool rest is WAY TO FAR AWAY and the roughing gouge is to far over the tool rest.

Thanks for the tip! Extremely new to turning and dont know proper technique. So you want just the tip of the chisels to be over the rest? Also I feel like there is a deadspot kinda setting up the rest where I cant adjust it to reach the middle of the stock. Is that normal? Thanks for the advice.

Yep if your log is longer than the tool rest, work on one end of the log, then move the tool rest for the rest.

The way ya had the spindle roughing gouge on the rest was just a good catch away from maybe breaking the tang.
