Turning plates
This weekend I'm going to try turning plates or flatwork or whatever its called. All I've turned on the lathe so far are pens and back scratchers. Any advise would be appreciated.

Keep your speed down and wear a face shield! If it flys off the lathe its heading for you. Don't as how I know this!
Also, for plates or platters, I prefer a recess instead of a tenon. Keep you tools SHARP!

I too have turned several pens and am working towards turning bowls.
Today I found this new video (the first of two) by Brendan Stemp.
No Catch Bowl Turning
He explains and shows clearly how to use a bowl gouge correctly.
I hope it helps.
