Battery Storage - Dispenser unit

Post by berry »

Here's a nice little project for a beginning woodworker. A great chance to try our your SS table saw and drill press. Anyway this is an easy and functional project and uses scrap stock so it shouldn't cost you anything.

The orginal plan for this was in Wood Magazine. I found it Googling "free battery storage unit plans". Most of the dimensions didn't appear. I must have an old version of Adobe Reader or something? Who knows?

The pieces and dimensions I used:

Back 1/4" pw 12 x 9 (could use masonite)
Floor 1/2" pw 2.5 x 9
Dividers 1/2 pw 2.5 x 10
Spacers 1/2" thick pw various width depending on the battery
Front cover to fit, 1/8" plexiglass

I carefully laid out for the batteries and sides on the floor. This was a help. The dividers were drilled to create an opening to 'reach-in' and grab a battery.

I glued the back to the floor, clamped with a spring clamp and nailed it with a couple of brads. I then glued and nailed one side. Then worked my way left to right just gluing the dividers and spacers. In addition to spacing the dividers left to right it also pushes them to the front. The C's didn't have one, they rest against the back panel and the AAA's should have had an additional piece 1/4" or be thicker.

The other thing worth noting is that on the spacers should have been 1/16 wider. A couple of the slots are too tight and the batteries don't slide down very well.

?I'm wondering if this shouldn't accommodate 'pancake' batteries too?? Maybe a small drawer under the unit??
