That's a nice-looking one. I'd gladly pay the $275 asking price for a 10ER if I had to. But it's a buyers market for them, and you can usually get them for less. The fact that that one has been listed for a month already tells me the price is on the high side in your area.

In my area, they usually sell for about $150, unless they have the optional speed changer, which that one does not. A couple of weeks ago, I paid the asking price of $145 for clean one that did have the speed changer, but needed new pulleys and spindle bearings. Judging from the description in the ad you're look at, that machine may well not need any new parts.

If you need one fairly soon, I'd think that an offer of $150 would be reasonable. Without a speed changer or factory legs and casters, I doubt that the seller will find a buyer willing to pay more.

Thanks..I am very close to Manhattan, so you can imagine why the price is so high...Anyway, I dont know much about these, but have been checking them out lately.

A little on the high side price wise. Without the speed changer $150 is a good offer. There is one on Craigslist in Austin, Texas with speed changer for $175. I know you are not in Texas just a reference on market price. The speed changer alone is worth $150 right Fred Sheldon ? Nice unit looks to be in good condition, but too high.

They are great machines. You can download all the manuals from this site, as well as old newsletters showing lots of cool things that you can do with them.

I should have been more specific. Is it very limited without the speed change? For example, can I use the lathe and the drill press functions..?

Lack of a speed changer is definitely not a show-stopper. It's more in the "nice to have" category.

The 3-step pulleys that you see on the motor and headstock in the pics give you three different speeds to choose from for the various operations. The speed changer is an add-on belt-drive CVT (continuously variable transmission) that lets you easily fine-tune the spindle speed. You still use the three-step pulleys, which gives you three different speed ranges to choose from. The speed changer also gives you a lower minimum spindle speed (good for turning large bowls, using circle cutters, etc.) and a higher maximum spindle speed (good for shaping and routing). But there is very little that you can't do with just the standard three-step pulleys.
