Lathe Dust Collector Hood

Too anyone who uses the lathe function, how do you collect the wood shavings and sawdust?

I noticed there are several hoods for sale at Rockler, Woodcraft, etc. But, if someone has developed their own Hood, I would be interested in seeing it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/ideas.

Unfortunately I have never found a good method for dust collection when doing bowls etc. The chips and dust just fly everywhere so its hard to contain. I have been known to just wheel the shopsmith out the door, close the door and have a nice day of turning outside. One of the greatest assets of the SS is the ability to wheel it outside. Then I use the ultimate vac system for clean up. My electric leaf blower !

Your post caught my eye and what I made for a drum sander dust collector might work for your pen turning accessory. I don't turn pens, but if I did I see no reason why it wouldn't work. The beauty of this thing is it is heavy enough that it doesn't move and fits between the tubes just right. The air circulation slots could be removed so bigger chips would pass. I see these on eBay quite often for almost nothing.

There is no shaving collector in existence that will do a good job when roughing out a cylinder. You may be able to control the direction the shavings will go but they will go far and wide. I sweep them into pile with the "lathe Tool" shown in Terry's post and then use the dust collector/ shop vac to pick up the pile. One thing I usually forget is to close the drawers on the nearby cabinets and I wind up with drawers full of shavings!!! Not to mention shavings in my shirt pockets!!
