Live edge vanity

I posted this on a Facebook page earlier but found that it is way to cluttered up for my liking so I deleted my account. I'll just stick to posting here at Shopsmith.

I was ask to make a vanity from this slab of eastern cedar.

My first step is to make an edge that is somewhat square with the rest of the world.

Now for the miter cut to establish the depth of the vanity and to form one side of a waterfall edge.

The slab is to thick for the track saw on a 45 so I had to pull out Old Henry.

I will clean this edge up with a block plane for a good tight miter.

This is where the fun started. Seems the entire center of the slab was rotten and it broke in two when I picked it up.

I decided to try to put it back together with some large dominoes since this was the part chosen for the top.

It felt pretty solid when I clamped it up so things were looking up.

The top took a while to get flat. It had high and low spots.

What it did reveal however was how mismatched the back side of the miter was.

The right side was pretty easy to blend in with a spoke shave.

The left side was more of a problem. I drew a line where I decided to remove some material.

Then I used the jig saw.

This time when I put the miters together it looked a lot better.

I decided to use hidden screws and glue to join the 2 units. Not an easy way to use hidden joinery because one side of was 2 1/2" thick and the other 1 7/8".

I cut some plugs.

Glued them in and trimmed them flush.

I had to blend on of the voids in the top with the leg. A carving chisel did the job.

It is now at the shop that does all my finishing being sprayed with conversion varnish. I'll update later with pictures after it has been installed with the vessel sink. It should be pretty cool because it will have a floor to ceiling mirror behind it. Still trying to figure out how to attach it to the wall/mirror.
