I wish I knew how to go back and tag the listing. The milled flats suggest it would be tightened with a wrench. If truly left hand threads, that is similar to SS design as on sawblades arbors, for example. There are internal threDs as well, so something else screws into it. Maybe some day we'll stumble across it but looks like I can run my SS just fine without using it. That makes me feel better.

There is lots more info in my SS manual than the book in the glovebox of my Buick so will be reading it carefully. The Buick is unlikely to cut my finger off! I once met a guy who claimed the power tools never hurt him as long as he was afraid of them. but once he lost that feAr, he got hurt. I'm still timid.

Am I rambling? Sorry.
That is true for SS arbors for the 1 1/4" hole since the nut to hold the blade is on the left side of the blade. The SS saw arbors that take a blade with a 5/8" hole have the nut on the right side of the blade (as all other saw arbors) and are right hand thread. I can't imagine why that arbor would have left hand threads.

Same reason as on the SS arbors(Normal load tends to tighten left hand threads).

You don't by chance have a lathe duplicator, do you?

The only SS arbor that has left handed threads is the 1 1/4" saw blade arbor. That is because the nut screws on from left to right. Every other arbor is right handed and the nuts screw on from right to left. The internal threads on my Nova chuck are right handed since it screws onto the adapted from right to left. My Powermatic table saw arbor is right handed since the nut screws on right to left.

No, I don't have a lathe duplicator. I went to my shop and got the two pieces, and for the life of me I can't figure what they go to.

Arbors, nuts, keyed washers and rotational direction (as it applies to a SS).

Desired result: The nut will not loosen under load.

Circular saw arbors: blades always rotate the same direction.
................ So if nut is on quill side, it must be a left handed thread.
....................If on outer end of arbor, it must be a right hand thread.

Other stuff: If the rotational direction is bidirectional, a keyed washer is needed to eliminate loosening of the nut due to running/stopping torque.

the Mrs. Saw me reading this post and the photos. Her late father used a Shopsmith all the time. Her eyes widened in recognition. Daddy had these parts, she said. But she doesn't remember what they are for. It's been more than 50 years, after all. I kind of feel like Louis Leakey finding fossils in Africa! :D

Assuming the pix is not reversed(mirror image), the external threads are right handed on the second part.

Perhaps it is an extension for 'something' similar to the SS live tailstock extension.

The internal thread appears to be right handed also as I would expect. You can see the start of the first thread at the 4 o'clock position.

I don't have a thread pitch gage so tried to match those threads using a small tap and die set (SAE). The threads would cross in the likely looking dies. I tried both NF and NC threads. That is where I got the brainstorm that it might be left hand thread. Well, I've been wrong lots of times before. Since these parts don't seem to be critical on my SS, I may show them to my mechanic nephew. He will doubtless be able to ID the threads. If so, I'll come back to this thread and report.
