Molding/dado arbor

I wanted to buy a saw arbor for 5/8 arbor blades and purchased something from a SS repairman. What I got was a molder/dado arbor. With shipping it came in just about MSRP from the factory. It will cost me even more to send it back. So, can I use it for something else? Mount a grinding wheel on it, maybe? I think it is p/n 505506.

Who was the seller? Where did you buy it? That is not a a SS 5/8 saw arbor. Who was the "repairman"? However, if it is 5/8 it will fit 5/8 saw blades. it is just not the standard saw blade arbor.

If you don't already have a dado set, you might want to save the arbor until you do.

Consider it a general purpose arbor.

As a saw arbor, its length and the thickness of the nut may be a problem.

Also the automatic blade to slot registration will not be effective.

It will work as a grinding wheel arbor.

It should have washers(recessed center on one side), spacers and a keyed washer in addition to the nut.

I bought it from Alex at 505shopsmith.com, who is in Albuquerque, NM. His main business seems to be rebuilding SS head stocks.

Looking on the SS site the caution is "don't use this arbor for regular saw blades."

505506 shows up on Shopsmith's site as a dado/molding arbor. They state that it cannot be used as a saw arbor on 5/8" hole blades.

There might be some safety issue if used as a saw arbor. I don't know,and looking at it, I can't see what the issue might be. However, a saw blade with 5/8" hole would mount on it. I'm sure others have used that arbor as a saw arbor and probably could tell you more about using it that way.

I have used one of those arbors with a saw blade for years until just recently when I picked up a 5/8 blade arbor. You will have issues with trying to tilt the table a lot as the nut and end of arbor will hit the trunion bar of the table, but otherwise it worked just fine for me.
