Sunset Potting Bench

My second SS project worth mentioning was fun on a couple of levels. It gave me some experience cutting (large) dados and I got some more SS learnin'. Learned how to tune my old, inherited block plane and use it to break corners. Bought and learned that I like using a 4-1/2 Smoothing Plane.

The other fun aspect was that this project is for Ms. Twist - and she didn't know it. I told her that I was building a workbench for the garage (need badly!). Just about all our friends knew what I was up to, but we were able to contain the secret. She even got a little upset that I was obsessed with the project. I did move slowly since I wanted to learn as I went and didn't want any bad mistakes.

When I finally told her that it is not a workbench, but her own potting bench, she lit up with such a smile! Months earlier she had asked for something much simpler (a door on saw horses would have satisfied her), but I wanted her to have something a little nicer.

Here it is in her chosen location next to what's left of our neighbor's fence.

I dug and tamped the ground, placed a weed barrier, and laid some old bricks & cement squares out for the table. I was pleasantly surprised that I managed to get it perfectly level. All pressure treated wood and she opted for no paint or finish. I didn't get it done quite soon enough for her spring planting frenzy, but it'll be there next season :)

GREAT looking potting bench. Thanks for posting it.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Yes yet another project that I have had on hold for many many years now.... How do you people find time to get these things done???

So I have to ask, what makes this a Sunset Potting Bench?

Yep, Ron nailed it. They call it a Backyard Potting Bench on the site's page, and the Sunset Potting Bench Project in the PDF plans.
