sharpening lathe chisels

I just recieved my new sharpening guide from SS but, I've not been able to find a link, anywhere, that shows the degrees for the angled edges on the standard 5 SS lathe chisels. Can someone here point me in the right direction?

Unless you have a preference or some other reason, go with the angle already there until you have a preference or other reason.

Trial and error(light touch) will allow you to match the existing angle.


There are likely as many opinions re angles as there are respondents to your question. Most likely all will not agree with the oem.

Thanks all. I've got plenty to start with. I guess the most concerning thing for me is making sure I don't over-shape a chisel to an angle that makes it unusuable.

SLOW and easy with the SS sharpening guide until you get used to it. You can't get the angle wrong that you have set unless you don't keep the tool firmly against the gauge.

As JPG said almost everyone says the OEM tools are not correct. For sure the SS tools are not sharp. Sharpening IS required out of the box. I recommend Doug Reid's process with the SS sharpening guide at first and then adjust accordingly as you gain experience.

I prefer the Doug Reid method and angles. I turn pens and find that those methods work for me. On that note trial and error may help you, but take notes on the setup you use (pictures help too). Good luck and have fun

I have the SS set and I bought a carbide set too but I always seem to fall back to the SS I like the carbon steel you can get them super sharp although the edge doesn't last as long as the high speed steel sold by others

After turning my "Stairway to Leaven" project posted yesterday, I decided to finish-grind my chisels (HSS) on the Strip Sander, using the SS guide just clamped to the sander's table. With the PowerPro, turning down the RPM's takes some of the drama and over-heating out of the situation. I'm good to go for a few more projects now!

All y'all have great replys to my question so, I'll ask this one too.
I've read/heard & seen in youtube videos and papers that leaving a burr on the edge of your lathe chisels can be considered okay or not okay. But, which tools would be adversely affected on their first cut after sharpening if they had a burr on the edge?

Those that you intend to use for 'shearing'.

The burr helps 'scraping'.
