Getting ready for 1st project

I am getting ready to start my first project and am wanting to make cutting boards and a slide out shelf for my dad that would roll out between refrigerator and wall. I don't know what they are called lol a narrow shelf with rollers on bottom and open on both sides. Does anyone have any ideas or plans that would help me??? Thanks in advance. Billy

Sounds like great projects! Have you checked out woodcraft or rockler? they have plans and the hardware you'd need. Most of the hardware I've seen at those places is good quality.

Cutting boards can be made in a number of different configurtions. Just google cutting boards to see some designs.

RE: The roll out shelf. Can you give us more info about the space and the height of the shelf? A photo of the space would help. Will the shelf sit on a stand that has wheels on the floor? Maybe you want to build a narrow cabinet with a couple of shelves like the narrow ones in this picture?

If I knew how to post pics on here I would lol
Just picture your refrigerator sitting about 7 or 8" away from the wall,,, now building a 6" wide box (open on both sides) the size of the refrigerator,, with shelves across it with dowels or small pieces of wood across to keep the "jars, cans, etc" from falling out, and putting some kind of casters/ wheels on it so it would roll straight out.
I hope I explained that well enough lol thanks for everyone's help!!

Do you mean like this? I found it on Pinterest. It has a back but could have dowels on both sides as you described.

I envision doing one of these. I will use one drawer slide on a matching wood L bracket at the top attached to the wall to keep it travelling straight, stable, and a decent pair of fixed casters at the bottom, and another drawer slide on a cleat near the casters, on the bottom.

Something like this could be made with 3/4 stock ripped to make the uprights and plywood shelves attached a variety of ways and as said before, dowels at the appropriate spots (though omitted in this sketch). You could drill the holes for the dowels by stacking the uprights together so they would all be at the same position.

The best woods for cutting boards are maple (hard), cherry and black walnut.
Avoid oak.
