Thank you again everyone for the replies. Hvac replacement is getting scheduled for early December, and depending on my friend Billy's schedule (my tile man/carpenter) I would think the bathroom remodel should be done by the end of January (this includes the doubling of the estimated time of getting everything done LOL). Starting in February I'm gonna start searching CL for Shopsmiths, close enough I can borrow a truck and go pick it up. If I find nothing I like, I'm gonna place an order with Shopsmith (doesn't seem like anyone here bought theirs new). I will be making the first few boards with just the SS, and drill press. I'll probably set up the drill press for all the holes, and leave it that way, use the SS drill press for all other drilling. I'm not retired, and do not have lots of free time, so I'll have to see how long the process is for making boards by hand (no cnc). Advantages of not having cnc is MORE money, and more square footage available in shop. It would be a nice toy to learn. I am really hoping not to wear out my welcome as I expect this to lead to lots of learning for me. I could see me taking a weeks vacation, and only coming up from the basement for food, facilities and sleep. I have already laid out adding a sub panel, relocating the computer desks, and where the work table is getting built, plus storage cabinets above, and one's on casters under the table. This is looking like my most fun winter since I was in school. Artie

You have gotten a ton of advice here and opinions If cribbage boards is going to be your bread and butter, personalize them also, maybe different woods, a different shape, exp shape of a state, color, in WI alot are green and gold, Packers, or Red and White, Badgers, Shaped in a foot ball helmet. I know that is more custom then production. I owned my own residential remodeling business for 20 years, I was hands one, one thing I learned, is read a client, if they want something special, charge for it, figure your cost, labor, and add a third at least, they will pay for it. Electricity, tooling,sharping, wear and tear on you machines need to be considered. Treat it as a true business.

Ummmm, JPG bought his Goldie new in the 60's, I bought a new Mark 7 in 2013, there are lots of new purchased machines. If you can afford it, buy the Mark 7, amazing machine and worth every penny. Keeps the mothership ... well mothering, you can always add another Mark or 10ER later if you want ....

rjent I am leaning to a new setup for the reason that I'm a newbie, a new machine is ground zero, with none of the possible minuses that can come with a used machine. I would have no idea what to expect to come with the machine, or what new products fit on it, easily. The only minus I see with a new unit is cost. I honestly don't see me getting to the point where I'm spending money on this dream till end of February. ERLover, you were perhaps blunt, blunt is good, I have those same thoughts about my responsibilities to my wife and son. I have weighed all that before I posted. No decision I have made in my life, that I felt this strongly about, have I ever regretted. I figure if I take good care of my equipment, this will always have a good value. I have been reading the threads here for a couple of weeks before i posted, and I have read a lot of posts from you, you are a good guy, with a lot of knowledge. (See I'm buttering you up to tap your brain LOL. I live in Pepperell Ma, no idea if anyone here is close by. Artie

Welcome Art. I bought my Mark 5 new in '84 or so. Upgraded to 510, then 520, and now a PowerPro headstock. I think a lot of us old guys may have bought new, then added used machines to their shops later on. I still have just the one, but now that I have the extra headstock a shop deputy is not too far down the line. Have fun with the new hobby whatever direction you decide to go.

A question that might get answered here, I have seen the stand alone power stations on the website, but they are apparently not in production right now. Does anyone know if this is temporary, or are they not going to carry them anymore? I could see where one or two of them open up lots of efficientcy. Rol them out of the way when not in use. I do not know of the 'plan', but realize it is not all it is cracked up to be. It is quite useful for slower driven SPTs, but not for a jointer for instance(it will drive a jointer, but at a slower speed than the M5/V/II/7).

Yes it takes up less room than a Mx. They are a bit noisey and they tend to 'vibrate' due to belt set and a sheet metal 'base'.

In spite of all that, I like em(got 2).
