So the boss gave the go ahead to start the cockpit table for the boat. I know we have discussed this one before but wow good teak is expensive. I went to Austin hardwoods and bought the teak today. 20 bd ft was $590.00 ( includes Ca tax) . Seems outrageous but that seems to be the going price. I found it slightly cheaper about an hour north of me but the price was not low enough to warrant the drive. So now we start the project.

Ooooh! I would be trembling with nervousness, approaching that lumber with a tool. But, it is gorgeous wood.

Yep! with taxes comes to just short of $30/bd ft/. Beautiful, Prime wood like that does sell at a premium. This is why we find a lot of MDF furniture with veneer.
If we desire solid wood projects we need to pay to get them. I recently paid $20/bd ft for black walnut to make a rocking chair. Bought extra to allow for errors in construction. The cost thing is the same for a blanket chest made a year or so ago.
I can attest to the probability that no one wants to pay over $450 for a rocker or $300 for a blanket chest.
I refuse to build any furniture from plywood or MDF. Also I don't intend to sell any.

You just haven't found the right market. After watching my neighbor the upholster I believe there are people that will spend that much and more. He often gets brand new furniture sent to him to tear off the upholstery and redo in a different material. Often the material costs more that the original piece. It is unbelievable what people will contract him to do. He just shrugs his shoulders and smiles.

It is going to be somewhat of a challenge as it needs to match the rest of the woodworking on the boat which is fairly high level. The fiddles will be the only challenge and that will be some router jigs for morticing. Lots of wafers and no fasteners.
